Columbus, Ohio – Former Buckeye guard Amber Stokes will travel to Sweden this month to play professionally for the Solna Vikings of the Damligan, Sweden’s top league for women. Solna has finished in the top four in the league for the past eight seasons and lost in the Finals in 2012-13.
Her agent, Matthew C. Krejci, Esq., of MK Sports and Entertainment LLC (Dublin, Ohio) said the deal was signed last week and Stokes is ready to showcase her abilities in one of Europe’s top leagues. “Amber is looking forward to traveling overseas to compete at a high level. She will likely play point guard for the Vikings and will be joined on the roster by Brandi Brown, formerly of Youngstown State and the 2013 Horizon League Player of the Year. With these two players on the roster, I believe the Solna Vikings will be in the hunt for a league championship.”
Christer Sjögren, sports director of the Vikings, said, “Amber is a very athletic player with good size for her position and a solid background from Ohio State. She will be very important in our defensive scheme, but will also have a big offensive role as our point guard.”
Stokes attended training camp for the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars earlier this summer. At Ohio State, she appeared in the NCAA Tournament three of her four years with the Buckeyes, including a run to the Sweet 16 during her sophomore season. She averaged 8.9 points per game during her senior campaign and was named to the Big Ten All Defensive Team. In 2011 she was named the Big Ten’s defensive player of the year. Stokes is a product of Lincoln High School, Gahanna, Ohio.
