PROVO, Utah – Ohio State rolled in a 64-minute short stint to get the 2017 season started, toppling the UTRGV Vaqueros in straight sets (25-17, 25-11, 25-15). The Buckeyes attacked .451 while limiting the opposition to a .191 hitting clip.
Taylor Hughes steered the ship impressively, contributing to 42 of the team’s 47 kills with 33 assists and nine kills. She threatened triple-double distinction by adding eight digs as well.
Ashley Wenz began her senior campaign with a bang, pacing the Buckeyes in kills (13), hitting percentage (.667) and service aces (3). While Wenz carried a large load on the outside, Madison Smeathers and Lauren Witte inflicted mass damage from the middle. The underclassmen middle duo combined for 14 kills on 28 error-free attempts.
