Abeysinghe, Gaziev Compete at Commonwealth Games Friday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Matt Abeysinghe, a junior on the Ohio State swimming team, set a Sri Lankan record and Ruslan Gaziev, an incoming freshman for the Buckeyes, had the second-fastest split for the Canadian team in the prelims of the 4×100 relay at the Commonwealth Games Friday in Australia.

Abeysinghe led off Sri Lanka’s relay with a 49.51, .17 off the Ohio State school record, as Sri Lanka advanced to the finals of the Commonwealth Games for the first time. A native of Dehiwala, Sri Lanka, Abeysinghe, Abeysinghe also will be competing in the 100 freestyle Saturday and the 50 freestyle Monday.

Gaziev, an incoming freshman in 2018-19, swam a 49.38 in the finals to help Canada to a fifth-place finish after going 49.78 in the prelims. Gaziev also will be competing in the 50 and 100 freestyles for Canada.
