Freshman Amy Meier records first hole-on-one of her career, junior In Hong Lim tied for seventh with a round to go
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A hole-in-one helped the 21st-ranked Ohio State women’s golf team improve its second-round score and maintain its spot in the upper half of the standings Saturday with 18 holes to play at the 38th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. The Buckeyes had a team score 311 (+23) on the par 72, 6,335-yard University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens and the team is sitting in ninth place with a total of 626.
Duke continues to lead the 22-team field, featuring 19 teams in the top 50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, with a sum of 600 (+24). Three Big Ten teams are in the top 10 with Michigan State in seventh and Purdue in eighth, just a stroke ahead of the Buckeyes.
After a rough start to her second round that included bogeys on seven of her first nine holes, Amy Meier settled down after the turn and made par on four of her next five with a bogey on No. 13. The freshman from Rochester Hills, Mich., began to chip away at her score with a birdie on the par 4 No. 15, then took out a 6 iron on the tee on 16 and lobbed a shot right in for her first hole-in-one of her golfing career. She went on to birdie 18, battling back to finish 4-over and move to a tie for 26th at 156.
Also with a round of 76 was In Hong Lim. The junior from Melbourne, Australia, had a bumpy start with double-bogey, bogey, bogey on her first three holes, but then she made par on her next six holes. After another bogey on No. 10, she birdied 11 before a double-bogey on 12. Lim chipped away at her score with birdies on Nos. 13 and 15 and made par on her last three holes. She leads the Buckeyes in a tie for seventh at 7-over 151.
Freshman Rachel Rohanna moved to 1-under early in her round after making three birdies in a row from Nos. 6-8, but stumbled on her next three holes with a double-bogey, bogey and double-bogey. The Waynesburg, Pa., product then bogeyed four of her last five holes to finish with an 80 and tie for 61st with a sum of 161.
Vicky Villanueva carded a round of 79 that included a birdie, six bogeys and a double-bogey. The sophomore from Argentina is a stroke ahead of Rohanna with a total of 160 to tie for 56th place.
Senior captain Emma Jandel was hindered by three double-bogeys in her round of 84. She had another six bogeys in her round after making par on nine holes, including six of her last eight. The Dayton native is tied for 76th place at 163.
Competing as an individual is freshman Susana Benavides, who carded an 81 and is also tied for 61st.
