From Megan …
Rise and shine its game time! At 6:30 a.m. we ate breakfast at the hotel. No one was focused on the night before because it was a new day!
We headed to the field with one thing on our minds … winning. Everyone seemed completely dialed in during batting practice and warm ups. I pitched the first game vs. Sam Houston, and with some great plays by the infield and excellent offense we beat them, 6-0. Oh and of course, we couldn’t have done it without Vanessa Spears yelling “This is how we do it in Columbus” the entire game. Thanks Vanessa!
Sam Marder and Courtney Pruner both hit bombs in the first two innings, loosening up our offense. Our entire offense was on fire this game!
We got off to a rocky start the second game vs. Baylor but quickly turned things around. With some clutch hitting by Shep, Pruner, Sam, Becca (Rachael Shepherd, Courtney Pruner, Sam Marder, Rebecca Schultz), and the rest of our team, we pulled ahead in the seventh. I must say, Melanie pitched very well and our defense again was great. Especially, T.A.M.I. (Whitney Cooper and Alicia Herron)! Of course Whitney had to make things exciting by almost dropping a fly ball in the seventh inning!
After our two wins we headed to lunch which of course was fun. I think our lack of sleep had caught up to us at this point because the bus ride back seemed much quieter. With two great wins under our belt we cannot wait to play tomorrow. We had some free time back at the hotel. Some of us visited with parents and caught up on homework but most managed to take a nap.
Off to dinner we go! Take 2 more Bucks!

Finally, our first game day has arrived! Our game wasn’t until 7 p.m. so we had all day to prepare. We ate breakfast around 10 a.m. at the hotel which gave us a chance to sleep in.
After an hour of study tables, coach told us we had a chance to practice on dirt before the game. Thank goodness! I thought we left the cold Ohio weather, but apparently I was wrong. It was one of the coldest practices I have ever experienced. Taking ground balls on dirt was … interesting at first, but we quickly got the hang of it again.
After practice, we had an unexpectedly long lunch so once we finished it was time to get ready to play! Everyone was in good spirits and ready to get after Houston. Between the headphones blaring and the jokes on the bus, we were ready to play. Unfortunately, our 7 p.m. game had been pushed back to about 8:30 p.m. But don’t worry, our 9 a.m. game with a 7:15 a.m. cage time was still something we looked forward to the next morning.
Let’s take a moment to break down the time: 8:30-10:45 p.m. – our game; 11-11:30 – travel time to the hotel; 11:30-12:30 – eat, shower and think about how we are getting less than six hours of sleep. Wake up was at 5:45 a.m. so it was a nice nap before we played two games.
Ok, now back to our game on Friday.
Nothing was going to keep us down this game, from warm-up to game time we were loud and energetic. The cold weather and increasing wind was not a factor for us. Despite a great pitching outing by Bo (Lindsay Bodeker) and Mel (Melanie Nichols) in relief, we fell short, losing 1-0. I must say our defense played great that game! However, not pleased with our performance we headed back to the hotel to get some sleep.
The trip we have been waiting for months has finally arrived!
We have been counting down, for what seems like forever, and when today finally arrived we started off with a delay. Everyone was in good spirits and excited to play as we loaded the bus around 10:30 a.m. to head to the airport.
As we finished loading the bus and got settled in, the bus got stuck in the snow. With the help of traffic and parking, the field maintenance crew and the entire team moving to the back of the bus … mission accomplished.
Finally, we are on our way :-).
Everything went smoothly as we boarded our first flight to Memphis. However, our second flight we were not so lucky. We sat in the runway for at least 45 minutes, which gave Mel (Melanie Nichols) plenty of time to meet her future soul mate … a two-year old boy with bright blue eyes!
After arriving late in Houston, our scheduled practice was canceled because of rainy weather conditions. So instead we headed one of our favorite Italian restaurants! Conversations grew quiet as we demolished countless baskets of bread sticks and salad. After dinner we headed back to the hotel where we had a quick meeting about the weekend.
The time is finally here, the season has arrived and we couldn’t be more prepared or excited. Well, it’s off to bed for me and my roomie (the one and only Karisa Medrano)!
Take 5 and Go Bucks!
