COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (3-2 overall, 2-0 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team behind a 17-kill, 10 dig performance by Pieter Olree defeated Mercyhurst (3-2, 0-2) 15-4, 15-13, 15-10 in St. John Arena Wednesday night. The Buckeyes had three additional players with double figure kills with Rene’ Esteves picking up 14, Jose Pereira 13 and Greg Lehman 11. Laker Jim Zorn came off the bench to score a team high 10 kills with Todd Ledoux and Adam Tokash adding nine apiece.

Mercyhurst held an early 4-2 lead in game one but gave up the next 13 points to OSU for a 13-4 Buckeye win. With the game tied a four-all an OSU block by Olree and McMillan, an ace serve by Pereira and an overpass kill by Phil Kerewich opened up a 7-4 lead. OSU continued to serve for points on an ace by Esteves, a block by Olree and McMillan, two aces by Angel Aja and a kill by Olree to take the lead to 12-4. On two Mercyhurst hitting errors, the Buckeyes took the lead to 14-4 and a kill by Esteves closed the game at 15-4. The Buckeyes hit .545 for the game to .038 for the Lakers.

Mercyhurst opened game two with a 3-0 lead but OSU tied the match on an ace by Pereira, a block by McMillan and Lehman, and a Mercyhurst error. After a four-four tie, OSU took a 6-5 lead on a Laker error and a solo block by McMillan. An OSU error closed the margin to 6-5. The Lakers took a 9-7 lead on an ace by Tamborino, an kill by Brian Kapusta and an OSU error. Mercyhurst extended their lead to 12-8 on back-to-back ace serves by Tokash and an OSU hitting error. The Buckeyes got a run of points including a kill by Lehman and Pereira to tie the game at 13. Back-to-back errors by the Lakers ended the game at 15-13 for OSU. The Buckeyes hit .341 for the game to .171 for Mercyhurst.

In a side-out game, OSU took an early 4-1 and never trailed. The Buckeyes held 7-4 and 11-5 leads. Mercyhurst closed to 12-8 but would come no closer. An Esteves kills ended the game at 15-10 that saw 10 OSU point come off Laker errors. OSU hit .423 in the game to .239 for the Lakers. For the match, Ohio State hit .415 to .168 for Mercyhurst. OSU controlled the net with 12 blocks to two. Pieter Olree (0-5) and Colin McMillan (2-3) had five blocks each for the Buckeyes. Ohio State had the edge in digs, 25-22 with Olree recording a match-high 10. Angel Aja equaled his career high of three ace serves for the third time, part of six ace serves for the Buckeyes to four for the Lakers. Aja also had 62 assists in the match, while Mercyhurst’s Greg Beato had 39.

Ohio State now travels to Ft. Wayne, Indiana to face ninth-ranked Indiana-Purdue (2-0, 2-0) on Friday. OSU will then play at Ball State on the following Thursday.
