COLUMBUS, Ohio–Thirty two student-athletes and cheerleaders will graduate at OSU Summer Commencement, scheduled for 9:30 a.m., Aug. 31 at St. John Arena.
Several of the latest student-athlete graduates left their mark on the playing fields and classrooms at Ohio State.
Lisa Strom (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) was a two-time All-Big Ten selection in women’s golf and a three-time National Golf Coaches Association Academic All-America for the Buckeyes, leading OSU to three-consecutive NCAA Championship appearances. In 2000, Strom became OSU’s first-ever postseason medalist, capturing the NCAA East Regional individual title.
Miranda James (Charlotte, N.C./C. Milton Wright) became the first All-America in the history of the Ohio State women’s lacrosse program as a junior by being named Mid-Atlantic Regional All-America for defense. She earned the same award during the 2000 season as a senior. James directed both the defense and the midfield with her exceptional stick skills and speed. During her career she recorded 46 points, 36 goals and 10 assists.
Nicki Jones (Skyesville, Md./Liberty) was a dominating force on the lacrosse field her entire career as a Buckeye. She started all 59 games she played for the Scarlet and Gray. During her career she recorded 14 points off eight goals and six assists.
Yelena Kalkina (Almaty, Kazakhstan) was the 1997 NCAA champion in women’s foil as a freshman. She earned All-America honors three times (1997, ’98, ’99) and was an OSU Scholar-Athlete. She completed her career in 1999, going 90-2 in foil and placing third at the NCAA Championships. Kalkina ended her OSU career with a 252-7 record.
Michaela Moua (Vantaa, Finland/Makelanrinne, Helsinki) was a 1999 Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete during her career on the women’s basketball team.
