SEVEN STARTERS RETURNING
The 2006 Buckeyes will have seven starters returning for this season. Setter Marisa Main, middle blocker Danielle Meyer, outside hitters Felicia Jones, Ashley Kiel, Brianna McCarthy and Ami Stevens and libero Brittany Dahms return for the 2006 season. McCarthy, who did not play last season, was a starter as a freshman (setter) and sophomore (outside hitter).
NINE LETTERWINNERS RETURNING
Ohio State has a total of nine letterwinners returning for the 2006 season. In addition to the seven starters listed above, liberos Anna Tengnas and Megan Blake received letters last season.
INCOMING CLASS SHOWS PROMISE
The Buckeyes will have seven freshmen on the roster in 2006. The class has five scholarship players including setter Ashley Hughes, outside hitters Heather Royal and Anna Szerszen and middle blockers Meghan Simons and Kristen Dozier. Liberos/defensive specialists Lindsay Schad and Michelle Hammond round out the class.
BIG TEN HONORS
Setter Marisa Main and middle blocker Danielle Meyer were named to the 2005 All-Big Ten Team. ALL REGION SELECTIONS
The American Volleyball Coaches Association selected setter Marisa Main and middle blocker Danielle Meyer to the Mideast All-Region Team. For Main, it marked her second consecutive season on the team.
The AVCA named setter Marisa Main a second-team All-American and middle blocker Danielle Meyer, a third-team selection for the 2005 season. Main as a second-team selection in 2004. Additionally, Main was a second team selection to the Asica/Volleyball Magazine All-American Team and Meyer was a honorable mention selection.
USA NATIONAL TEAM PARTICIPANT
Ami Stevens has participated with USA Volleyball for the last three summers. She was a member of the 2006 USA National A-2 Team and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the U.S. Open Championships in New Orleans. Stevens has also played for the 2004 and 2005 U.s. Junior National Team.
BIG TEN NUMBERS
Four returning Buckeyes were ranked in the top-10 of the final conference-only statistics for 2005. Setter Marisa Main was fifth in assists per game at 12.43 and was second in hitting percentage at .363. Middle blocker Danielle Meyer had a 4.49 kills per game average to rank fourth while outside hitter Ami Stevens was ninth with a 3.53 average. Outside hitter Ashley Kiel was tied for fifth in aces per game with a .34 average on 38 ace serves.
SIX ACADEMIC ALL-BIG TEN
Six returning players were named Academic All-Big Ten last season. They include Brittany Dahms, Marisa Main, Brianna McCarthy, Danielle Meyer, Ami Stevens and Anna Tengnas.
SEVEN OSU SCHOLAR-ATHLETES
A total of seven players were honored as Ohio State Scholar-Athletes for the 2005 season. They include Brittany Dahams, Ashley Kiel, Marisa Main, Brianna McCarthy, Danielle Meyer, Ami Stevens and Anna Tengnas.
The Buckeyes will face five Big Ten opponents that played in the NCAA Championship last season. They include Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue, Penn State and Wisconsin. The always tough Big Ten schedule is a double round-robin format with the Buckeyes opening on the road defending champion Penn State. Ohio State will also host tournaments the first two weekends of September and play in the Towson Invitational in August.
THE INTERNATIONAL SIDE
Three squad member this season are from outside the United States. Libero Anna Tengnas is from Hyltrebruk, Sweden and outside hitter Felicia Jones is from Concord, Ontario, Canada. Freshman outside hitter Anna Szerszen is from Conflans Ste Hne, France.
Five players from last year’s team will not return. Libero Rebecca Kastein, outside hitter Amanda Miller and setter Jackie Schart have completed their eligibility. Libero Caitlin Slevin will remain with the team as a manager.
With a solid core of returning players to go along with the incoming class, Ohio State looks to improve on their 22-9 record of 2005. The Buckeyes tied for third in the Big Ten Conference with a 14-6 record and reached the second round of the NCAA Championship.
