COLUMBUS, Ohio-Four student-athletes, with a combined 128 games played in Ohio State uniforms, were chosen by their teammates to represent Ohio State as captains, Jim Tressel, head coach of the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes, announced Friday.

Quarterback Troy Smith, center Doug Datish and defensive tackles Quinn Pitcock and David Patterson began service as the team broke fall camp until preparations begin Monday for the season opener vs. Northern Illinois Sept. 2 (3:36 kickoff on ABC) at Ohio Stadium.

Smith, speaking for his fellow captains, said the Buckeyes are ready to get the season started.

“This is a terrific honor to be elected captain by your teammates,” Smith said. “Work is just getting started. We have had a great training camp. Now we just need to keep going.”
