Columbus, Ohio – The fourth-ranked Ohio State women’s rowing team collected wins from the First Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four on Saturday morning at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River against No. 3 Michigan, No. 20 Duke and Notre Dame (RV).
The First Varsity Eight – Alice Riley, Bridget Schodorf, Sandra Dinter, Anne Dietrich, Aina Cid I Centelles, Rachel Engel, Stephanie Williams, Ida Kruse and Cassidy Jenney (coxswain) – collected an impressive 4.8 second win over Michigan with a time of 6:20.0. Duke (6:29.8) and Notre Dame (6:32.1) placed third and fourth behind the Buckeyes and Wolverines.
The Second Varsity Four of Ashley Saba, Joan Darnell, Abby Ernst, Kendell Massier and Emma Warns (coxswain) kept its perfect season going with a 5.4 second win over Michigan (7:28.5) with a time of 7:22.9. With the win, the 2V4 boat is now an unblemished 4-0 in races and has defeated a total of six opponents.
The 2V8 took second place in the second race of the day. Chelsea Harpool, Kimberleigh Warriner, Sarah Peffley, Maddie Perrett, Allyson Baker, Morgan Hummel, Cassandra Johnson, Annie Jachthuber and Anjali Fernandes (coxswain) rowed to a time of 6:32.0, finishing behind Michigan’s winning time of 6:28.9.
Michigan narrowly edged out Ohio State in the First Varsity Four by 2.7 seconds. The boat of Hanna Gottschalk, Hannah Hites, Catherine McNutt, Kaylee Koker and Helen Sudhoff (coxswain) finished with a readout of 7:10.7. Duke (7:24.1) and Notre Dame (7:34.7) came in to the finish line in third and fourth place.
In the Third Varsity Four, it was just Michigan and Ohio State on the water. The Wolverines pulled away from the Buckeyes (7:40.6) to win with a time of 7:28.6.
Both of Ohio State’s novice boats placed second in their races. The 1N8 – Bailey Spees, Madelaine Frendberg, Katherine Kreczmer, Madison Sheahan, Grace Libben, Megan Anderson, Sierra Tiede, Olivia Carter and Cameron Garcia (coxswain) – clocked a time of 6:59.2 to earn its silver. The 2N8 finished with a time of 7:14.2 less than half a second after Notre Dame won its first race of the day with a time of 7:13.8.
Saturday served as the last home regatta for nine seniors. Aina Cid I Centelles, Stephanie Williams, Allyson Baker, Daphne Socha, Anne Dietrich, Sarah Peffley, Sandra Dinter, Joan Darnell and Cassidy Jenney have played a huge role in the success of the program throughout the past four years. Cid I Centelles and Socha were members of the first national title in program history in 2013. During their time in Columbus, this senior class owns three national titles and have reeled off an impressive four-consecutive conference titles.
Ohio State will compete at the Clemson Invite next weekend (April 22-23), its final regular season regatta before the Big Ten Championships (May 13-14).
