PEORIA, Ariz. – Ohio State’s Jaclyn Lee had a fun two days in the sun this past week at the Westbrook Spring Invitational at Westbrook Village Golf Club. Not only did the junior help the Buckeyes to a second-place finish, Lee earned medalist honors for the second time in her career, doing so in record fashion.
The Calgary, Alberta, native finished the 54-hole tournament at 19-under par, two strokes ahead of Oklahoma’s Kaitlin Milligan, helping the Buckeyes to a team total of 840, two strokes back of the Buckeyes’ best 54-hole finish set four years ago at the same tournament.
“This was a really exciting week for me,” Lee said. “I’m really proud of the team for coming together to finish runner-up. It also was a special tournament for me individually, winning the tournament and breaking the school record. A 64 is my lowest tournament round and to be able to shoot it twice in three rounds was special. We’ve been working so hard this winter so we’re excited for what’s next.”
Lee opened the tournament Sunday morning using seven birdies and an eagle against just one bogey to shoot a 64, breaking Jessica Porvasnik’s previous school-record 65 set in the opening round at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in 2014. After 18 holes, Lee was two strokes back of Milligan, who shot an opening-round 62.
The course played significantly more difficult in the afternoon as Lee carded four birdies and another eagle, battling back from three bogeys to shoot a 69 and end the day at 11-under, three strokes back of Milligan and two behind Nebraska’s Kate Smith.
The junior then came out firing Monday morning, tallying a birdie on four of her first eight holes, and notching a birdie-birdie finish to post a bogey-free 64 and conclude the tournament at 19-under, two strokes ahead of Milligan and five up on Smith.
For the tournament, Lee was five strokes better than anybody in Par-5 scoring at 12-under, tying for the most eagles in the field with two and notching the second-most birdies.
Lee and the Buckeyes return to action at the Clover Cup March 16-18 at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
