COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State (8-1) men’s volleyball team, behind a match/career-high 20.5 points by Sam Stevens (5th/Sr., Miami, Fla.), defeated 15th-ranked St. Francis (Pa.), 3-1 (30-26, 30-26, 24-30, 30-20) Friday night in DeGol Arena. OSU’s Robbie Klein (Jr./So., Cincinnati, Ohio) added 19.5 points for the Buckeyes. Stevens equaled his career-high of 19 kills (.556) against the Red Flash, adding an ace serve and an assist block. Klein recorded 15 kills (.542), three ace serves and three assist blocks in the match. Nick Rivett produced a team-high 17.0 points for St. Francis with Marc Honore adding 16.5. Rivett had a team-high 16 kills (.467) and two assist blocks while Honore had 13 kills (.429), a solo block and five assist blocks.

From a 7-7 tie in game one, a kill by Stevens and a John Albertson (Jr./So., Ballwin, Mo.) – Dan Meske (Sr., Willow Springs, Ill.) block put Ohio State ahead, 9-7. At 11-9, a Buckeye error and a Pete Fryer kill tied the game at 11. Two errors by St. Francis and a Layne Dreven (5th/Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.)-Klein block gave Ohio State a 14-11 lead. The Buckeyes took the lead to five at 17-12 with a Klein kill. At 19-15, two kills by Honore and one from Travis Fox cut the lead to one at 19-18. Leading, 22-21, kills from Dreven, Klein and Meske and a Dreven-Klein block put the Buckeyes ahead, 26-21. A Fryer kill and two OSU errors cut the Buckeye lead to two at 26-24. A Meske kill and a Klein ace serve made it 28-24. An OSU error and a Meske kill set game point at 29-25. A Buckeye error made it 29-26. Ohio State won the game, 30-26, with an Albertson kill. The Buckeyes hit .577 to .250 for St. Francis. St. Francis broke a 1-1 tie with an Honore kill and a Honore-Shane Conley block to take a 3-1 lead. Trailing 8-6, a Red Flash error and an Albertson solo block tied the game at eight. A St. Francis error, a Stevens kill and an Albertson-Stevens-Meske block followed to give Ohio State an 11-8 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead, expanding it to five at 20-15. The Red Flash trailed, 23-17, before kills from Honore, Jordan Varee and Fox, a Honore block and an OSU error cut the Ohio State lead to 23-22. At 25-23, two Rivett kills tied the game at 25. A Klein kill and a Red Flash error put Ohio State ahead, 27-25. Kills from Fryer and Dreven moved the score to 28-26. The Buckeyes reached game point with a kill from Stevens. An OSU error stopped the game point at 29-27. Dreven, with a kill, won the game, 30-27, to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .571 for the game to .480.

In a close game three that saw 11 ties to reach 18-all, St. Francis took a 21-18 lead with a Honore-Varee block and kills from Rivett and Honore. At 25-22, three consecutive kills by Rivett gave St. Francis a 28-22 lead. A Klein kill cut the margin to 28-23. A Daniel Mathews (Jr., Shorewood, Wis.) ace serve made it 28-24. An OSU error set game point at 29-24. A Fryer kill ended the game in favor of St. Francis at 30-24. The Red Flash hit .586 for the game to .361 for Ohio State.

Ohio State broke a 1-1 tie in game four with a Dreven kill, an Albertson-Meske block and a Red Flash error to take a 4-1 lead. At 5-4, a six-point Buckeye run took the lead to 10-4. The run began with a Red Flash error, a Stevens’s ace serve, two blocks by Mathews and Alberston and an Albertson kill. Ohio State continued to expand the lead to 10 at 28-18. A Honore-Rivett block cut the lead to nine at 28-19. An Albertson kill set match point at 29-19. An OSU error made it 29-20. A kill by Stevens ended the game at 30-20 for the Buckeyes giving Ohio State a 3-1 victory. OSU hit .333 for the game to -.062 for St. Francis.

The Buckeyes hit .453 for the match to .300 for St. Francis. OSU had a 69-55 advantage in kills and a six-to-two margin in ace serves with Klein recording a match-high three. The Buckeyes gave up 26 service errors to 13 for the Red Flash. Defensively, St. Francis had a 30-29 edge in digs with Zach Nanni recording a match-high 13 for the Red Flash. At the net, Ohio State had a 14.5 to six advantage in team blocks. Sharing match-high honors were OSU’s Albertson and Red Flash Honore each with a solo and five assists. Buckeye Mathews posted a match-high 61 assists while Shane Conley recorded 46.

Ohio State continues on the road next week as it begins play in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association when they travel to face fifth-ranked IPFW Friday and at Mercyhurst Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
